The news is finally out! Rotary Clubs are not organizations of elderly gentlemen in suits who meet once a week to visit and have lunch. And our Rotary Club of Houma is far from that image!
We have a wide diversity of ages (23-95), male and female, along with different ethnic races, a good mixture of business professionals who bring a wide range of knowledge and life experience to our club, as well as a new generation of enthusiastic young people who have recently joined the work force and who are looking to volunteer and make a difference.
To the Rotary Club of Houma, “Service Above Self” is not just a motto, it is more of a call to action. Some of our community service projects include: Southdown Market Place Coke Booth (twice a year); Annual Dictionary Project for all 3rd Grades in Terrebonne Parish; Annual S.E.C. Santa Visit; New Flag Project; Food Partner with TFAE 5-K Run; Annual Blood Drive; Food Drive for our local Good Samaritan Food Bank; and a New “Reach Out and Read” Program. Our club also sponsors an EarlyAct Club at Mulberry Elementary School and two Interact Clubs, one at Houma Jr. High and one at H. L. Bourgeois High School. Internationally, our Rotary Club has helped to sponsor two water wells in Haiti, along with educational supplies for a school in a poverty-stricken area of that country. Of course, the club has taken an active role in joining the movement towards eradication of Polio world wide and will continue to do so...…because "We are this close!”
